Peter Loewer is a well-known writer and botanical artist who has written and illustrated over twenty-five books on gardening and natural history over the past thirty years. He wrote the first book on ornamental grasses, Growing and Decorating with Ornamental Grasses, back in 1974 and published the first book on nocturnal flowers for bloom and fragrance, called The Evening Garden. He has a monthly call-in garden show on Public Radio in Asheville.
His wife, Jean Jenkins Loewer has divided her career into working as a librarian, an art teacher (K-12), an artist, and illustrating a number of children's books, including the year's work on the paintings for The Moonflower.
 
They both grow what they write and illustrate, gardening on an acre of land overlooking Kenilworth Lake in Asheville, North Carolina.
 
Mr. Loewer ran an art studio dealing with scientific illustration in Manhattan for over fifteen years. He is also a well-known lecturer on topics dealing with gardening and natural history.
His botanical illustrations are in the permanent collection of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation in at Carnegie-Mellon in Pittsburgh.
